For me, Ant-Man and the Wasp drove home a message that had long encircled the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Framily. From start to finish all you need to know is that the chosen framily that stands beside you is always worth fighting for and to protect. Sure there is a lot of action, but for me, the heart and drive of the film is the love of the ones you choose as your friends and family = framily. From Scott Lang’s unbreakable connection to his daughter and unexpectedly mature and loving relationship with his wife and her new husband, Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne’s unique bond of support, to Scott’s friends and framily for life Luis, Dave, and Kurt… framily means everything and sticks together.
The new film picks up in the aftermath of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.
Though I adored the different dynamics and the humor in this corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the X-Con Security Crew are scene stealers. They not only are in legit business with Scott (Ant-Man), but are ready for all types of business with him both above and below board. The framily bond is to tight that unlike most films where you wonder who is being honest with whom, right from the start you realize there is no BS amongst this group.
“The Three Wombats,” as Dr. Pym inelegantly dubbed the trio of petty criminals (Michael Peña, David Dastmalchian, and Tip “T.I.” Harris) left an indelible impression, showing them they too could be heroes.
The Avengers history come back full force with the reintroduction of Dr. Bill Forester, a blast from the past in Hank Pym’s early days with S.H.I.E.L.D. with his wife Janet van Dyne.
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is directed by Peyton Reed and stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Walton Goggins, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Tip “T.I.” Harris, David Dastmalchian, Hannah John Kamen, Abby Ryder-Fortson, Randall Park, with Michelle Pfeiffer, with Laurence Fishburne and Michael Douglas.
