Frozen 2: Old questions answered, tougher questions asked (no spoilers)
November 15, 2019When you are so invested in a set of characters, like most Frozen fans were during the first film, you inevitably had questions. So much was left unsaid and the world seemed like an open door at the end of the film. It wasn’t because the first story was incomplete as much as it was because the fans wanted to know more. Thankfully, the filmmakers heard our cries and have gifted us Frozen 2. The movie picks up shortly after the first film ends and all has returned to a new form of “normal“ in Arendelle. That is until Elsa starts hearing a voice singing/calling to her. Despite her own resistance Elsa, along with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven leave Arendelle to travel to an ancient, autumn-bound forest of an enchanted land. They set out to find the origin of Elsa’s powers in order to save their kingdom.
As you can see from the preview, all of the main characters have returned to the screen for this film (Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff), but now we have some new faces as well. And even though it seems impossible, the emergence of many of these faces leaves us with more questions and we had at the end of the last film!
First things first, who is that adorable salamander? His name is Brunei and I will not give you much more info yet (spoiler filled post coming soon!), but know that your kids are going to want all of the merchandise. All of it. Buy it now.
From the preview we can also see that Anna and Elsa’s parents (played by Evan Rachel Wood and Jeremy Sisto) will be returning for this film. It is to be assumed that this will be back story to fill in the answers to some of our questions about the past as they were lost at sea in the first film.
Like I mentioned above there are also several new characters that we have never met before, but it is safe to say will play a large role in understanding the mysterious siren song that Elsa is hearing in her head and being led to follow. Sterling K. Brown, Rachel Matthews, Jason Ritter, and Martha Plimpton’s characters stood out specifically.
I have already seen the film and I feel like I should be clear that there are some issues parent should be aware of before bringing their children to the theater. They are going to have questions. There are going to be feelings that may challenge them. The first thing you should know is that this sequel has grown up. There are many ideas explored in this film that will go right over the younger ones heads, but at the right age range- there are some things that will bring up tough questions and require parents to be on point with their answers. Issues like boundaries, darkness, forgiveness, and death. And it may even go a step further into issues like diversity, colonization, and reparations in the idea that it is an obligation that young people reconcile the mistakes of the past in order to create a better future. Not every kid will get these themes, but they are there.
Another thing to mention: Kristoff. To be honest there’s a lot to say about him this time around but I feel as though I may move into spoiler territory to do so. I will follow up with another post the day with some of those points that you can read after you’ve seen the film. But be prepared for some feelings…
…and an 80’s power ballad.
About Frozen 2:
Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award®-winning team—directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2019.
