About Les Miserables
Set against the backdrop of 19th century France, Les Miserables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. This epic and uplifting story has become one of the most celebrated musicals in theatrical history. The magnificent score of Les Miserables includes the songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More,” “Master of the House” and many more. Beloved all over the world, Les Miserables is undisputedly one of the world’s most popular musicals.
Les Miserables has a storied history, dating back to the 1862 book. It is one of the most successful musicals of all time & 5th longest-running Broadway musical. Only 4 shows have had longer Manhattan lifespan: Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, The Lion King and Cats! The author Victor Hugo, had another famous piece of literature that was turned into a musical as well. His first successful novel was Notre-Dame de Paris, or The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It was reimagined into an animated musical Disney film in 1996.
Did you know…?
Did you know that during the original British run of the show, Patti LuPone fought against the requirement that the lead join the chorus when not in a scene? In an act of defiance (that future actors playing Fantine adopted as well) Ms. LuPone insisted on going out in drag for most of Act II. Today, most professional actors playing Fantine now follow her lead and wear male garments after intermission.
