Shazam Fury of the Gods opens March 17

March 16, 2023

Oh. My. Gods. Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel and Zachary Levi) and his family are back in Shazam: Fury of the Gods (opening March 17, 2023 nationwide)! If you are like me and a sucker for the mix of humor colliding with action and comic-style fun that the first Shazam movie brought to the screen then you will not want to miss this one. Many of us go to the theater to escape and have a good time and it looks like Warner Brothers and DC are coming through with just what we need.

Shazam

Who is Shazam?

In the comics, Shazam is also known as Captain Marvel and is the alter ego of Billy Batson. When Billy Batson speaks the name of the ages-old wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou), he’s transformed into the World’s Mightiest Mortal. This transformation gives him the powers of superhuman strength, speed, flight, and other abilities.

Shazam is an acronym that breaks down to:

S = The wisdom of Solomon

H = The strength of Hercules

A = The stamina of Atlas

Z = The power of Zeus

A = The courage of Achilles

M = The speed of Mercury

Who are his siblings?

In the movie (as well as the comics) Billy’s foster siblings – Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer/Adam Brody), Mary (Grace Caroline Currey), Darla (Faithe Herman/Meagan Good), Eugene (Ian Chen/Ross Butler), and Pedro (Jovan Armand/D.J. Cotrona) also obtain superpowers of their own that turn them into their superhero counterparts, also known as the Shazam Family. At the end of the first film Shazam! Billy used the staff to give them powers. When they transform they age to older, stronger heroes just like Billy.

Who are the Daughters of Atlas?

Hespera (Helen Mirren) is the eldest Daughter of Atlas and Guard of the Tree of Life. She comes to Earth, seeking retribution for the death of her father and fellow gods. With the “power of the elements”, Hespera uses her control of the natural world against mortals – including the Shazam family.

Kalypso (Lucy Liu) is the deadliest of Atlas‘s daughters, and Guard of the Tree of life. She holds “the power of chaos”. She whispers terrible, maddening, mind–controlling utterances to morals in her bid to take revenge on the humans who destroyed the gods.

Anthea (Rachel Zegler) is a quiet, mysterious new girl at school who befriends Freddie Freeman (Billy’s closest friend/brother) is actually the millennia–old goddess Anthea, Daughter of Atlas. With the “power of axis”, Anthea can rotate the Earth beneath her feet, sending all those around her into a spin.

Is this a family friendly film?

I have not seen the film yet, but cannot wait to see it! Will I make it a family movie night? If you are wondering (like me!) if Shazam Fury of the Gods is safe for kids, check out Christie’s review at Raising Whasians!

If you’re looking for a fun, nostalgia filled fa If you’re looking for a fun, nostalgia filled family film to go see in the theaters this weekend- look no further! “Harold and the Purple Crayon“ is a great film to take the whole family to the theater to see. Day two started back at check in with a security s Day two started back at check in with a security sweep and then off to visit Mosquito River Lagoon where we learned about the very real impact that the lack of data can have on ecosystems when it comes to unintended impact. Specifically decisions that are made by people that have impact on the environment without data to back up the restoration of the impacted areas. From there we took the bus to visit Launch Pad 40 up close(-ish) and get a look at the Space X Falcon 9 rocket on the pad ready to launch and send the PACE satellite to space. After that we went to the most unassuming building at NASA with probably the biggest impact, Hangar AE- Launch Services Program Communication Center. This is also called the Mission Director’s Center. This is what you see on TV when you see the “command” center. It is actually a series of rooms that are collection and storing data nonstop. We got a chance to practice calling the launch and toured the facility. We even saw the door that had all of the mission director patches on it! We then toured the Cape Canaveral Space Force Museum and got to see a lot of artifacts and interesting items and recreations of the history of the military operations regarding space that happened prior to the Apollo and Shuttle missions. It is also a former launch site, which means I have now seen 3 in real life. Our final stop for Day Two was at the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. We got to check out the emergency rocket escape vehicle called the MRAP. It is a former military vehicle that has found new purpose after being used in Afghanistan and now is used to protect rocket crews if something goes wrong during launch. As we were leaving we got to do something every single astronaut has done since the start of manned space missions: walk the ramp! This is the same ramp that all astronauts walk down to get into the transport vehicle that takes them to their rocket or shuttle. Day One recap of #NASAsocial for the PACE mission! Day One recap of #NASAsocial for the PACE mission! First, we arrived at press check in & rode the bus to our first stop of the day to spend some time in the classroom learning all about PACE! PACE stands for Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem. Then we headed to the press room & for a press conference for NASAtv with all female scientists & leaders of the PACE mission. This important open sourced data will be an amazing step towards combating climate change. Next we all took a moment to take pictures at the countdown clock & outside of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). This building is surprising on so many levels. One of the biggest surprises being just how big it truly is. It's sort of an optical illusion from the outside. You cannot truly process it's size until you are inside. Guess what we did next? We went inside of the VAB and geeked out of course! That was a wrap on Day One, and we were gifted admission to Kennedy Space Center, so some of us went over to visit my favorite girl Atlantis. #KeepingPACE PACE will advance the assessment of ocean health by measuring the distribution of phytoplankton, tiny plants and algae that sustain the marine food web. #NASAsocial #KeepingPACE
