[…] Looking for a movie to see this weekend in theaters without the kids? Check out Shazam! Fury of the Gods […]
Oh. My. Gods. Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel and Zachary Levi) and his family are back in Shazam: Fury of the Gods (opening March 17, 2023 nationwide)! If you are like me and a sucker for the mix of humor colliding with action and comic-style fun that the first Shazam movie brought to the screen then you will not want to miss this one. Many of us go to the theater to escape and have a good time and it looks like Warner Brothers and DC are coming through with just what we need.
Who is Shazam?
In the comics, Shazam is also known as Captain Marvel and is the alter ego of Billy Batson. When Billy Batson speaks the name of the ages-old wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou), he’s transformed into the World’s Mightiest Mortal. This transformation gives him the powers of superhuman strength, speed, flight, and other abilities.
Shazam is an acronym that breaks down to:
S = The wisdom of Solomon
H = The strength of Hercules
A = The stamina of Atlas
Z = The power of Zeus
A = The courage of Achilles
M = The speed of Mercury
Who are his siblings?
In the movie (as well as the comics) Billy’s foster siblings – Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer/Adam Brody), Mary (Grace Caroline Currey), Darla (Faithe Herman/Meagan Good), Eugene (Ian Chen/Ross Butler), and Pedro (Jovan Armand/D.J. Cotrona) also obtain superpowers of their own that turn them into their superhero counterparts, also known as the Shazam Family. At the end of the first film Shazam! Billy used the staff to give them powers. When they transform they age to older, stronger heroes just like Billy.
Who are the Daughters of Atlas?
Hespera (Helen Mirren) is the eldest Daughter of Atlas and Guard of the Tree of Life. She comes to Earth, seeking retribution for the death of her father and fellow gods. With the “power of the elements”, Hespera uses her control of the natural world against mortals – including the Shazam family.
Kalypso (Lucy Liu) is the deadliest of Atlas‘s daughters, and Guard of the Tree of life. She holds “the power of chaos”. She whispers terrible, maddening, mind–controlling utterances to morals in her bid to take revenge on the humans who destroyed the gods.
Anthea (Rachel Zegler) is a quiet, mysterious new girl at school who befriends Freddie Freeman (Billy’s closest friend/brother) is actually the millennia–old goddess Anthea, Daughter of Atlas. With the “power of axis”, Anthea can rotate the Earth beneath her feet, sending all those around her into a spin.
Is this a family friendly film?
I have not seen the film yet, but cannot wait to see it! Will I make it a family movie night? If you are wondering (like me!) if Shazam Fury of the Gods is safe for kids, check out Christie’s review at Raising Whasians!
